Recreational vehicle and trailer insurance.

Snowmobiles, motorcycles, ATV/UTV, motorhomes, trailers and more.

A snowmobile parked on a groomed trail through deep snow and heavily laden pines

This is the line that says the most about where we are. Sleds, side by sides, four wheelers, campers, motorcycles and the trailers that haul all of it. For a lot of households up here these are not toys at the edge of the budget, they are essential and a real part of the asset list.

They are also the machines people most often assume are already covered by something else. Usually, they are not.

What an RV or trailer policy can cover.

  • Snowmobiles

Liability, damage to the sled, and physical damage coverage while it is trailered and stored. Trail use raises questions worth asking.

  • ATV and UTV

Four wheelers and side by sides, on private land, on trails and on the roads where local ordinance allows it.

  • Motorcycles

Road bikes and off road, including gear and custom parts, which standard limits often miss.

  • Motorhomes and campers

Class A through C, travel trailers and fifth wheels, including contents and liability while parked and set up.

  • Utility and boat trailers

The trailer itself, which is a separate item and not automatically covered by the vehicle towing it.

  • Accessories and gear

All subject to the coverage and limits on the policy.

Trails, ice and the off season.

This region rides. Groomed trail systems run through Cheboygan, Otsego, Emmet and Presque Isle counties, and a good winter puts a lot of machines on them. Liability on a trail with other riders is a genuine exposure, not a formality.

Ice adds its own question. If a machine goes through, how the policy responds is not something you want to research afterward. Ask before the season, and ask specifically.

Off season storage matters too. Machines sitting in a pole barn or under a tarp all summer are still exposed to fire and theft.

Worth raising before you buy.

List the modifications

Aftermarket parts, plows and custom work are frequently not covered at value unless they are declared.

Guest riders

If other people ride your machines, that is worth raising. Who is covered while operating it varies by policy.

Questions we get asked.

Is snowmobile insurance required in Michigan?
Michigan requires registration and a trail permit for most snowmobile use. Bear in mind that riding shared trails without liability coverage is a large personal risk.
Does my homeowners policy cover my ATV?
Generally, not once it leaves your property, and often not on it either. Motorized recreational vehicles are typically excluded and therefore need to be scheduled or to have a policy of their own.
What happens if my sled goes through the ice?
That depends entirely on the policy and the coverage you carry. It is a specific enough scenario that it is worth asking about by name before the season rather than after.
Do I need to insure a utility trailer separately?
Usually yes if you want the trailer itself covered. Your auto policy may extend liability while towing, but that is not the same as paying to replace the trailer.
