Umbrella insurance.

An extra layer of liability protection above your auto and home limits.

Rain rings spreading across a calm misty lake, seen from the end of a wooden dock

An umbrella policy sits on top of the liability you already carry. When a claim runs past the limit on your auto, home or boat policy, the umbrella picks it up from there.

It is one of the least understood policies we write and, dollar for dollar, one of the most useful. Large liability limits are surprisingly inexpensive once the underlying policies are in place.

What an umbrella policy can cover.

  • Excess liability

Additional limits above your auto, homeowners and watercraft liability, usually in millions rather than thousands.

  • Defense costs

Legal defense, which can be significant on its own even when a claim ultimately goes nowhere.

All subject to the coverage and limits on the policy.

Why this comes up more here than you would think.

Liability exposure is not really about how much money you have, it is about how many ways people can be around you when something goes wrong. A dock and a raft. A boat with other people’s kids on a tube. Sleds and side by sides on shared trails. A cottage full of guests.

That is an ordinary summer for a lot of households in this county.

Worth raising before you buy.

Underlying limits come first

Umbrella carriers require minimum liability limits on the policies beneath. Sometimes raising those is the first step.

It is not property coverage

An umbrella covers liability, not your own house or boat. It adds nothing to your dwelling or hull limits.

Tell us everything you own that moves

Boats, sleds, ATVs and trailers all need to be accounted for so the umbrella actually sits over them.

Questions we get asked.

How much does umbrella insurance cost?
It varies with your underlying policies, your household and the limit you choose. What we can say is that it is usually less than people expect for the amount of coverage it adds.
Do I need an umbrella policy if I do not have much money?
A liability judgment can reach future earnings, not just current assets. If you have a boat, a dock, recreational vehicles or regular guests, the exposure exists regardless of your balance sheet.
Does it cover my boat and my snowmobile?
It can, but only if those policies are disclosed and meet the underlying limit requirements. This is exactly why it helps to have the whole household written in one place.
